It traces their arrival on the island and analyses within the context of regional influences, their economic activity, as well as their spiritual life and artistic achievements, in particular, the rock art discovered in caves and on ceramic artefacts.Historic accounts and legends associated with Taíno caciques (chiefs) are discussed. The book has over 40 illustrations including maps of numerous caves as well as drawings of Taíno motifs. There are 20 photographs of important expeditions and artifacts discovered on them. The book also chronicles the activity of the Cacique Hatuey Archaeological Society of Baracoa since its foundation in 1977, as well as outlines of courses taught by the author in archaeology, anthropology, speleology, and restoration and conservation.The first of two appendices presents relevant documents and letters to the author.
