These editions of Bench 153B features Marimekko’s Seireeni (siren) pattern, created by Maija Isola in 1964 and inspired by the movement of water during her travels in Greece. The pattern’s name refers to the mythical sirens whose songs lured sailors at sea. The Seireeni pattern is applied using marquetry on the birch veneer seat, where contrasting wood grains create a shimmering effect. The bench’s versatile design — equally suited for seating or storage — was a later addition to Alvar Aalto’s “L-leg” collection, introduced in 1945.
Bench 153B Kivet is part of the Artek + Marimekko collection. This limited edition piece brings together Alvar Aalto’s 1945 bench design and Maija Isola’s Kivet (stones) pattern from 1956. The pattern, based on hand-cut circles, was likely inspired by the rough stones surrounding Isola’s atelier home. The Kivet pattern is applied using marquetry on the birch veneer seat.
